Grandma Josie's Story

This is Mr. Hackett’s Grandmother, Josie. In 1972, after 40 years of marriage Josie lost her husband, Archie, to cancer. But Josie was blessed with good health, a loving family, and good friends. She loved playing the organ in church. She enjoyed going dancing and playing cards with her senior group. And Josie was still cutting her own lawn when she was 81! The money she and Archie had saved enabled her to have a worry-free retirement… or so it seemed.

Then, at about age 86 Josie began suffering some health setbacks; nothing too serious, but her family decided she shouldn’t be on her own, so she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law 1,500 miles away from her Illinois home. Gradually, her health declined to the point that her daughter, a registered nurse, couldn’t provide the care she needed.

It was Josie herself who made the decision to move into a nursing home. She passed away after 5 ½ years as a resident; all her savings gone. Unfortunately, proper planning had not been done. Most of Josie’s savings were lost when they didn’t have to be.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to help my grandma when I was younger. But now it’s what I do for a living,” say’s Mr. Hackett. “I don’t want any family to have to go through the things mine did. All it takes is some planning, and that’s what I help my clients do.”
